Restaurant and Mountain Cabins on Lasithi Plateau in Crete_2019
The location and the orientation of the plot served as the main axes of the project design. The composition consists of distinct geometrical volumes with gable roofs, interconnected at ground level, balancing into a single cluster. The aim was through individual volumes to adapt the scale of the composition to the scale of the free, open, mountainous landscape, using the archetypal form of the home / shelter. In the second phase of the project, more similar volumes are going to be constructed in order to host the cabins. The entrance of the restaurant is highlighted by the double-height roofed, centrally located. All of the main areas of the restaurant are on the ground floor level, with additional expansion to the rooftop level while the supporting areas are underground.
The shell and the roof of the individual volumes are covered with corten metal sheets so that the warm shades of the volumes harmonize with the colors of nature. Wood paneling, wooden pergolas as well as stone surfaces contribute to the warm image and atmosphere. The transparency of the individual volumes, with the cross that the large, characteristic frames form, give a characteristic identity to the façade of the complex. Key issue of the study was to ensure that the building is fully harmonized with its natural environment. Selection of materials was based on sustainable development and eco-friendly options, with the aim of reducing the energy footprint of the complex to the environment.
